Quick answer — puppy weight by breed
A puppy weight calculator by breedestimates today's expected range from the breed's adult ideal weight and age. Toy/small puppies are often ~50–60% of adult weight around 4 months; large and giant breeds mature later and sit lower at the same age. Use Body Condition Score (lean ~4/9) alongside the scale.

Puppy weight FAQ
- How does a puppy weight calculator by breed work?
- It starts from your breed's adult ideal weight range (by sex), then applies size-class growth fractions for common ages (about 2, 4, 6, and 9 months). Large and giant breeds mature later, so the same age is a smaller percentage of adult weight than in toy or small breeds. Always confirm with Body Condition Score — lean growth (about BCS 4/9) beats chasing a single number.
- What should my puppy weigh at 4 months?
- Many toy and small breeds are roughly halfway to adult weight around 4 months. Medium breeds are often closer to 45–55% of adult ideal; large and giant breeds may still be only 30–50% because they mature later. Use the breed selector above for a range, then feel ribs and check the waist weekly.
- Is puppy weight the same as adult dog weight?
- No. Adult charts show the finished ideal range. Puppies should track below that range until skeletal maturity — forcing adult weight too early risks excess fat and, in large breeds, developmental orthopedic disease. Pair this calculator with a puppy feeding plan and BCS checks.
- My puppy is above the estimate — is that bad?
- Not automatically. Litters vary, and some lines are denser. If ribs are hard to feel or the waist is gone, slow the calories slightly and recheck in two weeks. If ribs are easy to feel and energy is good, the scale may simply reflect a larger frame. Ask your vet if growth seems uneven or painful.
- When is a puppy at adult weight?
- Toy and small breeds often near adult weight by 9–12 months; medium around 12 months; large 15–18 months; giant 18–24 months. Switch from puppy food when growth has plateaued and BCS is on target — not on a fixed birthday alone.
