Maine Coonphysiology & feeding context
Maine Coons are among the largest domestic cats, with substantial bone and muscle. Males commonly sit well above mixed-breed averages. Frame size is not the same as fat: use Body Condition Score to separate a big-boned Coon from an overweight one.
Active Maine Coons may need the higher end of maintenance factors; sedentary indoor Coons often need closer to neutered-indoor levels. Weigh food in grams — cup scooping is especially inaccurate with large kibble.
Dense undercoat and a ruff around the neck can make Maine Coons look heavier than they are. Palpate ribs along the chest wall and check for an abdominal tuck from the side — the waist can be hard to see through a full winter coat.
