Quick answer
Pick your dog's current weight in the table below to see resting energy (RER), maintenance kcal, and a weight-loss starting point. Confirm body condition with the BCS tool — scale weight alone is not enough.
Labrador Retrieverphysiology & feeding context
Labrador Retrievers are food-motivated sporting dogs with a well-documented predisposition to obesity. Working lines may run leaner than show lines; always pair breed weight charts with a hands-on BCS rather than relying on the bag's "per cup" guide alone.
Active Labs often need ~1.4 × RER at maintenance; couch-potato Labs after neutering commonly need closer to 1.2 × RER. Treats, training rewards, and stolen cat food are frequent hidden calories.
A double coat can soften the look of the waist. Part the coat along the ribs and lumbar spine — you should feel ribs easily under a thin fat layer at BCS 4–5/9, with a visible tuck from the side.
Labrador Retriever calories by weight (lb)
Ideal adult range roughly 64–79 lb (male) and 55–71 lb (female). Steps every 5 lb — this breed is obesity-prone.
